This paper discusses the Baltic trade statistics and gravity estimates that reveal that Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have rapidly integrated into the international division of labor with a distinct EU focus. The authors hold that the Baltic states have taken a road toward the EU common market. They stress at the same time that the Baltic states have not abandoned their contacts to the Soviet successor states altogether. The authors therefore conclude that they still have the potential to serve as a gateway from Europe to the Community of Independent States markets.
