This paper contributes to the discussion of whether coal fired power plants with carbon capture and storage (CCS) should replace old power plants in Europe. Building on an earlier evaluation for the German city of Kiel, the authors make an economic and environmental assessment and compare profitability and emission levels of different options for a coal power plant with CCS. They find that integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) plants equipped with CCS run first or second in all scenarios when maximizing the net present value.
