This paper discusses global trends affecting the US oil industry, highlighting a need to counter the advocacy efforts being driven by international organizations. The author discusses the globalization of environmental issues, adoption of communication technologies and the influence of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). He argues that while NGOs have combined the globalization of environmental issues with technologically proficient global communications, the oil industry must respond to increased public policy and NGOs use of information and communication technology to advance their interests.
