This publication provides an overview of French President Nicholas Sarkozy’s performance, especially with regard to his government’s foreign policy. The author first explains some of the reasons behind Sarkozy’s rapidly declining popularity rates, citing his private life on one hand and some of his projects, like the Mediterranean Union, on the other. The author explains that Sarkozy has demonstrated a shift away from Europe and more toward the US and Israel, evident in his stance on Iran and Lebanon. The article then considers how a second term for Sarkozy might affect the balance of power in the EU.
