This publication discusses the EU's role in the post-Soviet space. The author argues against selective perception when dealing with 'frozen conflicts' and sets out guidelines for future EU policy. She argues that the EU should not apply double standards when it recognizes the independence of new states, that it needs a self-confident policy in order to be more productive, and that it should make better use of the strategic potential of soft power. Finally, she suggests that policymakers make use of the new foreign and security policy mechanisms that are provided for in the Treaty of Lisbon.
