This paper explores the positive role of memorials in portraying identity and promoting national unity, stability and reconciliation within post-conflict societies. It focuses on Constitution Hill, a proposed memorial of the inhumanity of apartheid in urban Johannesburg. The author explores opportunities for urban regeneration in terms of economic and social empowerment for the surrounding communities, as well as potential to reclaim urban memories and spaces.
