This paper examines the nature and extent of violence during South Africa's transition from apartheid rule to democracy, and within the new democracy itself, in order to inform a violence prevention agenda. It is based on in-depth interviews with refugee women living in Johannesburg, South Africa. The author focuses on women's experiences of armed conflict, their views on peace efforts, the political transition in their host countries, and their experiences of accessing resources in South Africa.
