This paper explores South Africa's culture of violence and examines trends, patterns and expressions of conflict in the post-apartheid nation. The authors challenge the notion that legislated change and a human rights framework will automatically bring an end to violence within an already violent, militarized society. They show that the persistent violence within South Africa highlights a 'culture of violence' within the country and that refugees and asylum seekers are urban based, facing violence and conflict in these spaces.
