This paper explores low rates of adherence to post-exposure prophylaxis to prevent HIV infection among rape survivors in South Africa's Guateng province. It is based on findings from interviews with rape survivors, health workers and observations at various health facilities. The authors show that patients defaulted from taking medication due to side effects, forgetting to take their medication, and not taking their medication properly.
