This paper explores how state repression and opposition to apartheid have resulted in high levels of militarization within communities in South Africa. It examines the Wilderness Trail and Therapy Project to assess its impact in empowering youth, facilitating new connections between them and their environment. The author provides an overview of the research base, methods and background information about the conflict in the Katorus region. She describes the Wilderness Project and its Transformation Trails, exploring key concepts that underlie the project and analyzing the experiences of participants, perceived challenges and possible impacts.
