This paper assesses the role of memorialization in the process of transition in countries of Southern Africa. It explores the transition processes from colonial rule to independence in Namibia and Zimbabwe, from apartheid to non-racist democracy in South Africa, from colonial rule and post-colonial dictatorship in Malawi, and from colonial rule and post-colonial civil war in Mozambique to peaceful, multiparty political system. The paper focuses on questions resolving the past, whether national reconciliation occurred in these countries, and, if so, how memorialization contributed to it.
