This article examines the outcome of an informal EU summit convened in March 2009 to discuss ways to tackle the financial crisis in preparation of the formal summit later in the month. The author first provides a macroeconomic context, then focuses on the protectionism issue within the EU and the economic problems of the Central and Eastern European countries.
