This paper presents the results of an assessment of the financial crisis' impact in Bangladesh, Benin, Bolivia, Cambodia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Indonesia, Uganda and Zambia. It highlights social protection, underscoring its importance to stop people from falling into poverty; stop the poor and vulnerable from falling deeper into poverty; and promote the livelihoods of poor people so they can catch the upturn when it comes. The paper also examines social protection policy responses to date.
