This publication features articles on the crisis in the management of immigrant diversity in the EU, and how, as a consequence, many European states are opting for a citizenship-based policy approach. The authors discuss how and why many European states are using the citizenship rhetoric to legitimate a restrictive policy based on a revival of a 19th-century state nationalism, which requires immigrants to pass a citizenship test before being allowed access to rights of residence and/or citizenship.
