This paper examines the redeployment of Airborne Warning and Control Planes (AWACs) from Germany to Afghanistan in support of air operations there. The paper provides an assessment of the need for NATO AWACs in Afghanistan and outlines a framework within which the discussion about AWAC deployment can be carried out. The author argues that while the question of deployment is important, a prerequisite to answering this question is a clear Afghanistan strategy with derived concrete objectives.
