This paper discusses implementation of South Africa’s National Urban Renewal Program (NURP) for crime prevention and assesses its potential to improve urban safety. It details the evolution of the NURP, lists targeted municipalities and discusses the scope of renewal plans at each location. The author concludes that urban renewal projects offer an unprecedented opportunity for innovation and learning in many aspects of crime prevention and fear reduction.
