This paper explores the role of traditional leaders in crime and violence prevention in the eThekwini metropolitan region, South Africa. It focuses on traditional courts and issues of land tenure. The paper considers the history of the institution of traditional leadership and discusses how colonization, apartheid and democratic governance have affected it. It also surveys the broader regional experience of incorporating traditional leaders into democratic structures.
