This paper provides an overview of Municipal Police Services/Departments (MPS/D) in South Africa. It reviews the procedure to establish a municipal police organization, surveys the enforcement competences of MPS/D and looks at their crime prevention mandate. The paper profiles MPS/D in Durban, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town.
