This paper assesses the experience of victims who testified at the public hearings of the Human Rights Violations Committee of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). It evaluates their participation as well as the longer-term impact on their lives. The paper concludes that while some victims saw the process as clearly beneficial or harmful, most came away with mixed blessings.
