This paper explores gender-based violence among adolescent girls attending South African schools. It points out that violence against adolescent girls in South Africa takes place against a backdrop of pervasive gender violence in society and stems in part from unequal power relations and strong patriarchal values. The paper notes that efforts to combat gender-based violence receive little priority.
