This report examines South Africa's 'taxi wars,' a series of violent conflicts in the largely black-owned and operated minibus taxi industry, following their deregulation in 1987. It offers a historical overview of taxi wars from 1987-2000, highlighting the development of the taxi industry and associated violence in the late-Apartheid era. The author argues that cycles of violence have become ingrained in the taxi industry, reflecting social tensions and problems of post-Apartheid society.
