The report discusses the strengthening of civilian oversight of metropolitan police departments (MPD) in South Africa. It discusses the nature and functions of local structures in different metropolitan areas that are responsible for civilian oversight of the MPDs. The author highlights that the development of metropolitan police agencies in South Africa has grown to includes crime prevention, traffic and by-law enforcement. He offers recommendations to evaluate and enhance police systems while incorporating feedback for civilian oversight.
