This report examines the children living amidst domestic violence, whose fathers are killed by their mothers and who subsequently lose their mothers to long-term imprisonment. It demonstrates that long-term imprisonment of a woman who has killed her abusive partner is not in her children's best interest. The authors base their discussion on the experiences of 16 children with mothers serving prison sentences at Johannesburg Central Prison, South Africa.
