This publication explores the impact of HIV and AIDS on children orphaned by the disease in South Africa. It highlights their vulnerability to violence, abuse and exploitation and the role that community-based organizations (CBOs) can play to address them. It explores children's rights and highlights the responsibilities and expectations of community members. The authors discuss stigma and discrimination surrounding children living with HIV, the impact on their communities, and the ways in which stigma has traditionally been dealt with. They offer capacity-building strategies for CBOs and information on strategies to mobilize communities.
