This report looks at imprisonment trends in post-apartheid South Africa. It focuses on constitutional provisions, legal protections and issues surrounding the implementation of prison sentences and the enforcement of prison security. The author highlights that the extent of overcrowding in South Africa's prisons violates the constitutional standards for incarcerating inmates.
