This report explores the experience of witnesses in the criminal justice system in South Africa. It discusses findings from a 2003 witness survey conducted at magistrates' courts in the Gauteng province. The authors examine the issue of intimidation, whether witnesses felt appreciated, time spent in the court and their overall feedback. They argue that witness testimonies should be supported in criminal justice trials not only to directly address public concerns, but because witness participation improves the system's efficiency in bringing offenders to justice.
