This paper evaluates the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's (TRC) contribution towards understanding history, identity and reconciliation in South Africa. It argues that in its pursuit of a particular kind of reconciliation, the TRC ignores the issue of race. The authors find this ironic given that South Africa's political and economic system was organized on the principle of race. They argue that the impact of this fact is evidenced in the nature of the reconciliation achieved in South Africa.
