This paper explores South Africa's 'new racism,' and the role of the democratic transition with a focus on nationalism and nation-building efforts post-1994. It describes the rise of xenophobia among the general population, the media and state institutions. The author uses quantitative attitudinal surveys of the population, evidence from foreigners' experiences and analysis of institutional racism to discuss forms which this discrimination is taking and its impact on the population.
