This brief examines French President Nicolas Sarkozy's suggestion to set up a committee of wise men in the EU to shape its general orientation. The authors argue that if such a committee is to be a success, it will be of the utmost importance to prevent it from being instrumentalized in the political arena. Additionally, what is needed is a true European debate on the future of the Union, not merely the development of specific strategies behind closed doors.
