The paper assesses the effect of various political variables, such as the type of political system, the type of democratic government, civil liberties, labor union strength, and economic variables on environmental quality. The authors combine environmental, economic, political, and site-specific components to obtain a statistical model. As a conclusion the paper investigates the likelihood of whether the effect of certain political variables on the environment is monotonic.
