This paper seeks to explain the variation in capitalization across banks and countries by focusing on market pressure, properties of national regulatory regimes, general economic conditions, and individual bank characteristics. The authors analyze 1'267 banks from 29 OECD countries and show that competition promotes bank capitalization.
