This paper discusses the status of the US' involvement in Afghanistan in late 2009. It examines the direction the debate over US policy regarding Afghanistan is taking and how this may influence the rise of Islamic extremism in Pakistan. The author explores whether US policy toward Afghanistan could also impact upon the remainder of South Asia. The paper's main conclusion is that the Afghanistan issue cannot and must not be treated in isolation from a wider global context.
