This paper argues that the European policy of the German government is bound to change, partly as a result of the new EU institutional framework. It analyzes the impact of a ruling by the German Constitutional Court and highlights the growing necessity of playing by the EU's new rules of the game. The author questions whether Germany can continue to support the trend toward deeper European integration and whether it will have a desire to do so.
