This essay provides a framework for the examination of the US Army's professional military ethic. The authors examine three major long-term influences on the profession's culture and its core ethos. They contend that in an era of persistent conflict, we are witnessing dynamic changes within these three influences. In order to analyze these changes, they introduce a more detailed framework which divides the military ethic into its legal and moral components, then divides each of these into their institutional and individual manifestations.
