This publication discusses ways of securing domestic public transport systems against terrorist attacks in the wake of the London bombings of 7 July 2005. As the author explains, surface and sub-surface transport systems are very difficult to protect, as the many entry and exit points provide easy accessibility and mobility for potential terrorists, and make passenger and baggage screening impractical and time-consuming. Nevertheless, the author proposes a number of measures that could be put in place to increase public transport security, including improved surveillance systems, easier access to escape routes, and advance planning. He concludes by briefly discussing the implications for Singapore's public transport system.
