This paper evaluates the historical development of the Cypriot conflict and analyses the situation in Cyprus following the process of EU enlargement. While advocating for a normalization of Turkish-Cypriot and Greek-Cypriot relations, the paper reviews the shortcomings of the Annan Plan and discusses the role of the international actors engaged in the conflict resolution negotiations. The author concludes that a revised UN plan should continue to serve as the basis for the settlement of the Cypriot tensions and that the economic conditions of the Turkish Cypriots must be improved. The author emphasizes the importance of confidence building measures, the role of the media, and the continued administration of financial and political support from the EU and the international community.
