This paper examines the political crisis in Madagascar and seeks to understand it by looking at the events that acted as catalysts to the crisis. The author asserts that the ousting of President Marc Ravalomanana and the accession to power of Andry Rajoelina is symptomatic of a general crisis of governance on the African continent. The author examines three issues in detail: the reasons for an unconstitutional change of government in Madagascar; Rajoelina's rise to power; and the core issues that perpetuate political instability in the country. It concludes with policy recommendations for a more stable Madagascar.
