This publication assesses the nature and degree of impact from HIV/AIDS on the institutional capacity of the Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS), examines the perceptions of LMPS officers with regard to HIV/AIDS and the response to the issue within the LMPS. The authors begin by providing a background to the HIV/AIDS situation in Lesotho as well as the theoretical framework of the study. The subsequent sections discuss the risks - and perceived risks - of LMPS personnel in contracting HIV, whether through police work or personal relationships. The paper then analyzes the perceived impact of AIDS on the institutional capacity of the LMPS.
