This paper reviews Hong Kong's role as an economic mediator between Europe and China. According to the author, there's a long-term trend indicating the declining importance of Hong Kong as an intermediate actor since China's opening up to the world market. By means of figures and statistics, the author illustrates the transformation in the patterns of trade and direct investment between Europe and Hong Kong. However, the author concludes that despite the challenge that the continuously deepening relations between Europe and mainland China presents to Hong Kong, it might be able to reassess its position in the world economy and to remain attractive to European investment.
