This paper examines China's role as an economic power and regional hegemon, reviewing the challenge it poses to US influence in the Asia Pacific. The author discusses the changes in China's conception of security and contends that security weaknesses cannot be overcome by purchasing modern weapons. He argues that although China has made economic progress since the end of the Cold War, it faces significant internal security challenges, including social, political, demographic and environmental problems.
