This paper debates the role of the US armed forces and military programs in the context of national and international security challenges in the 21st century. It reviews possible changes in the international security environment before and in-depth examination of US internal security requirements. The authors describe five strategic challenges facing the US Army: reconciling short and long term goals; maximizing the efficiency and political use of land forces; and expanding the definition of national security. They also discuss the importance of a controlled revolution of military affairs and of preserving public support for land forces.
