This paper explores the impact of nearly simultaneous information-sharing around the world on processes of US national security and policy formulation. It uses the Spanish-American War and the Tiananmen Square incident in China as examples of the media's power. The author defines national security issues as those which are concerned with national survival and preservation of the American way of life. He uses the two cases to show the direct and indirect connections between the media and national security policy.
