This paper discuss the roles and missions of the Mexican armed forces in the 20th and 21st centuries. It reviews the legal role ascribed to the Mexican army and highlights the increased civil action by the armed forces. The author discusses the army's involvement in several national issues in the 1960s, 70s and 80s, such as reforestation efforts. He contends that the most visible role for the Mexican military will be its anti-drug and counter-narcotics campaigns.
