This book surveys the trend of a democracy 'backlash' or 'rollback' in the European neighborhood during the second half of the first decade of the 21st century. Chapters assess the state of democracy in Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, Georgia, Ukraine, Armenia, Moldova, Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Morocco, Algeria and Egypt. The book is a sequel to the 2005 CEPS publication "Europe’s Democratisation in the European Neighbourhood," which was released on the heels of the color revolutions in Georgia (rose), Ukraine (orange), Lebanon (cedar) and Kyrgyzstan (tulip).
