This monograph examines the origins of Middle East fundamentalism with an eye to containment strategies for the US. The author points out that containment of fundamentalist movements depends first and foremost on the availability of accurate information about the movements. The author develops a theory on fundamentalism and argues that the solution is not to try to crush fundamentalist movements. Rather, US policymakers must locate and act on the basic splits within the movements, between their socially constructive and other more violent elements.
