This monograph probes trends in German defense policy following the end of the Cold War and national reunification. The author notes that like most of its NATO allies, Germany has undertaken a massive restructuring of its armed forces; however, countervailing domestic and external political pressures have hampered this effort. As of 1994, explains the author, German participation in peace operations and international humanitarian missions lacks widespread political support, as does participating in military campaigns in support of national interests outside of the immediate defense of German territory.
