This monograph analyzes the implementation of the 1986 Goldwater-Nichols US Department of Defense Reorganization Act. The author describes the congressional motive for passing the act, assesses the act's implementation status as of 1996, and discusses its impact on the Department of Defense (DOD). The author concludes that the DOD and the US have benefited from the substantial implementation of the Goldwater-Nichols Act; however, room for improvement remains, both for the DOD to complete implementation and for the US Congress to enact modifications to more coherently focus the act.
