This monograph looks at the US decision to make a troop contribution to the Implementation Force (IFOR) for the General Framework Agreement for Peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina (known popularly as the Dayton Accords). It discusses the prospects for creating suitable conditions for a lasting political settlement in Bosnia by December 1996, identifies the possible outcomes of a US departure from IFOR, and assesses the potential consequences for US national objectives and interests in the Balkans and beyond.
