This monograph explores the state of US-China military-to-military ties in the mid-1990s, following a curb in relations after the Tiananmen Square incident in 1989. It points out that some US observers question the value of renewed military ties with the People's Liberation Army (PLA) based on the limited gains accrued from the 1980s relationship. Be that as it may, maintain the authors, this attitude is short-sighted, especially given China's status as a emerging great power.
