This book presents the views of nine Strategic Studies Institute (SSI) analysts on the major trends that will influence US national and military interests in the decade succeeding 1996. The analysts explore the post-Cold War transition in the global security environment, dynamics in and around Russia, EU and NATO expansion in Central and Eastern Europe, and stability in Western Europe. They also look at US economic development and democracy promotion in Latin America, the strategic environment in the Middle East, democracy, development and security in Africa, US engagement with the Asia-Pacific region, and the outlook for the US armed forces.
